DISCIPLE: BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY This is the first of four DISCIPLE Bible Studies. It is a prerequisite to all other long-term Disciple studies
The purpose of DISCIPLE: BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY may be summarized in the words of Ephesians 4:12: "to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ."
|
Some people who complete this study will become leaders of DISCIPLE; all persons in the
study will be guided into servanthood and ministry. Because their ministry will be inspired as
well as informed, participants will become
- better Sunday school teachers
- better parents
- better youth and adult choir members
- better officers in the church
- better youth fellowship members
DISCIPLE’s purpose may be summarized in the words of Ephesians 4:12: "to equip the saints
for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ."
The disciple is a learner, believer, follower, proclaimer. The Disciple program aims to
produce Biblically nourished persons committed to live as disciples.
DISCIPLE assumes that the Bible is the key to renewal in the church.
DISCIPLE recognizes the human-divine nature of the Bible: The actual texts of Scripture were
written by human beings like ourselves in their cultural settings, under the divine inspiration of
God.
DISCIPLE affirms that the canon was formed as it is in order for God to speak to us.
DISCIPLE gives Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible
as the revelation of God.
DISCIPLE aims at transformation, not just information.
DISCIPLE calls on persons to submit themselves to examination by Scripture, to put
themselves under the power of God's word, and to be changed by God's word.
DISCIPLE invites persons to bring their experiences and struggles to Scripture. All persons
know something is amiss with their existence and yearn for word from God.
DISCIPLE uses biblical language and biblical images.
DISCIPLE draws upon the work of scholars to aid understanding of the Bible.
DISCIPLE requires reading large portions of Scripture each week.
DISCIPLE features group discussion of Scripture based on careful study and preparation.
DISCIPLE recommends use of the New Revised Standard Version study Bible for adults and
the Good News Bible (Today's English Version) for youth but also encourages use of a
variety of Bible translations.
DISCIPLE requires:
• Three to four hours of independent study each week (at least thirty minutes daily) in
preparation for the weekly study session.
• Attendance at and participation in an orientation session and all thirty-four of the weekly
study sessions.
• Designating and adhering to a particular time and location for daily reading, study, and
reflection. This will contribute to a disciplined pattern of study for lifelong learning and
growth.
